DREAM TEAM
On January 3, 2026, the United States successfully ousted and captured Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, during a high-stakes military operation codenamed Operation Absolute Resolve. Maduro was subsequently transported to New York, where he pleaded not guilty to federal drug trafficking and narcoterrorism charges on January 5, 2026.
The “Dream Team” Leadership
President Donald Trump has assembled a dedicated group of high-ranking officials to oversee U.S. involvement and the future transition in Venezuela:
- Marco Rubio (Secretary of State): Leading the efforts to implement political and economic reforms. He has clarified that the U.S. does not intend to govern Venezuela day-to-day but will enforce an oil quarantine to pressure for further policy changes.
- Pete Hegseth (Defense Secretary): Managing the military and security aspects of the operation and maintaining a robust offshore presence to ensure the remaining Venezuelan government cooperates.
- Stephen Miller (White House Deputy Chief of Staff): Coordinating the administrative and domestic policy alignment for the mission, emphasizing that the primary focus is the protection of American interests.
- JD Vance (Vice President): Playing a key role in the overall administration effort, though some reports suggest he has maintained a more distant role compared to the “hawks” leading the charge.Â
Current State of Venezuela
- Acting Leadership: Following Maduro’s capture, the Venezuelan Supreme Court ordered Vice President Delcy RodrÃguez to assume the role of acting president.
- U.S. Cooperation: Trump has claimed the U.S. is receiving “complete and total” cooperation from the remaining government in Caracas. He stated that RodrÃguez is “essentially willing to do what we think is necessary” to restore the country.
- Future Elections: President Trump has dismissed the possibility of holding new elections in the immediate future, stating, “We have to nurse the country back to health first”.
American Priorities: The administration has explicitly stated that securing access to Venezuelan oil and dismantling drug trafficking networks are core motivations for the operation.
