In December 2025, Elon Musk publicly accused Minnesota Governor Tim Walz of being “guilty of hiding vast fraud” following reports that improper payments in state welfare and Medicaid programs could reach $1 billion. Musk’s comments amplified a growing political scandal involving several state-run programs and the Somali-American community in Minnesota.
The Fraud Allegations
- Scale and Scope: While the well-known Feeding Our Future scheme involved roughly $250 million in stolen pandemic food aid, federal prosecutors recently revealed “industrial-scale” scams across 14 other programs—including housing assistance, autism therapy, and childcare. Some estimates by federal authorities now place the potential total loss since 2018 at up to $9 billion.
- Somali Community Involvement: A massive federal probe has charged nearly 100 individuals, many of Somali descent, for using sham companies to bill the state for services that were never delivered.
- Terrorism Connection: The U.S. Treasury Department and House Oversight Committee are investigating allegations that a portion of these stolen funds was funneled to Al-Shabaab, a Somali-based terrorist organization.
Whistleblower Intimidation and Complicity
- Whistleblower Claims: Republicans on the Minnesota House Fraud Prevention Committee alleged that state employees who attempted to report the fraud were “terrified” and faced retaliation from the Walz administration.
- Walz’s Response: Governor Walz has denied covering up the fraud, calling the $9 billion figure “sensationalism” and maintaining that proven losses are in the tens of millions. He has stated that his administration attempted to stop payments as early as 2020 but was blocked by a court ruling—an account a Minnesota judge later disputed.
- Action Taken: To address the crisis, Walz recently appointed a statewide “fraud czar,” ordered a third-party audit, and paused payments to the 14 high-risk programs.
Current InvestigationsAs of late December 2025, no criminal charges have been filed against Governor Walz himself. However, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer has launched a formal investigation into the administration’s “failure to act” and the alleged retaliation against whistleblowers. Congressional Republicans have also introduced the “WALZ Act” to implement stricter safeguards on taxpayer funds to prevent similar negligence.
