In December 2025, Elon Musk announced a major expansion of his xAI operations with the acquisition of a third building in Southaven, Mississippi, which he officially named “MACROHARDR”. The facility is approximately 1 million square feet (roughly the size of 14 football fields) and is designed to support the “Colossus” supercomputer project.
Details of the “Macrohard” Project
- Purpose: The facility will be used to train future generations of the Grok AI model. Musk described “Macrohard” as a “purely AI software company” intended to rival Microsoft by automating software development using AI agents.
- Computing Power: The site contributes to xAI’s goal of scaling to 1 million GPUs by 2026. It is currently powered by over 100,000 GPUs (expanding to 200,000+), making it the world’s largest AI supercomputer.
- Energy Consumption: The expansion aims to push xAI’s total power capacity to nearly 2 gigawatts (GW). For context, a 1.1 GW demand is estimated to represent roughly 40% of the entire energy consumption of neighboring Memphis.
- Infrastructure: To support this massive power load and bypass grid limitations, xAI is building its own gigawatt-scale energy hub featuring gas turbines and Tesla Megapacks.
- Branding: Musk had the word “MACROHARD” painted in giant letters on the roof of the Colossus facility, stating they are large enough to be seen from space.
Controversies and Local Impact
The project’s rapid development has faced significant local opposition:
- Pollution Concerns: Residents in nearby neighborhoods have protested the use of unpermitted gas turbines, citing noise and air quality issues.
- Resource Use: The facility consumes millions of gallons of water daily for cooling, leading to the construction of a dedicated $80 million water recycling plant.
Grid Strain: Local advocates have expressed concern that the massive energy requirements may prioritize AI training over the residential power needs of the community.
