Elon Musk recently claimed that “legacy media is reading from the same script”, suggesting that mainstream news outlets use identical phrasing and timing to promote a single narrative.
This sentiment was expressed during a discussion, possibly on the Joe Rogan experience podcast, where Musk criticized the phenomenon of multiple news sources simultaneously using the same uncommon phrases (e.g., “sharp as a tack” before a political debate). He argues this points to a coordinated effort rather than independent reporting.
Musk frequently attacks professional news media on his platform X (formerly Twitter). He is claiming they are “pure propaganda,” “lie relentlessly,” and ignore stories that don’t fit a collectively decided narrative. He encourages people to get their news from X users directly, claiming it is corrected faster when wrong, unlike legacy media which he says lets falsehoods persist for hours or days.
Musk has also pointed to government funding received by some major news organizations, such as the Associated Press and the BBC, as an explanation for why they might “all say the same thing at the same time” and become a mouthpiece for the state.
